Former police head stands trial for north China landslide that kills 277
BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- A former county police head who was removed pandora beads after a mine accident killed 277 people in 2008 in north China's Shanxi Province admitted on Monday taking bribes from the mine owner at a Beijing court.
The trial of Han Chunxi, former police head of Xiangfen County in Linfen City, was held at the Fangshan District People's Court in Beijing. No verdict was given on Monday.
An unlicensed iron ore dump collapsed on Sept. 8, 2008 in Xiangfen County and triggered a massive landslide, which devastated an outdoor market, a village and an office building.
catalog printingHan was charged with taking bribes of 40,000 yuan (5,860 U.S. dollars) pandora charms from Zhang Peiliang, former president of the Xinta Mining Company, which owned the iron ore dump, in 2006 and 2007.
In return, Han ordered his subordinates to halt inspections on the company's mine in January 2008 and connived at its illegal use of explosives, which eventually led to the tragedy, according to the Shanxi Provincial Department of Land and Resources.
